One of the handsomest birds on the planet is the Palawan Peacock-pheasant. This bird is found in the island of Palawan, Philippines. It is also known as Napoleon Peacock-pheasant. It is a medium-sized bird that grows up to 50 cm long. The tail feathers are decorated with large blue-green ocelli, which may be spread fanlike in courtship displays. The female is smaller than the male and less colorful. It is a threatened species due to ongoing habitat loss, small population size and limited range as well as hunting and capture for trade.

 1.) Temminck’s Tragopan (Tragopan temminckii)


The Temminck's Tragopan is a colorful medium-sized pheasant. It can grow up to 64 cm in length. The male is a stocky red-and-orange bird with white-spotted plumage, black bill and pink legs. It has a bare blue facial skin, inflatable dark-blue lappet and horns. The female is a white-spotted brown bird with blue circular eye skin.

2.) Indigo Banded Kingfisher (Alcedo cyanopectus)


The Indigo-banded Kingfisher is a brilliantly-colored bird native to the Philippines and can be found in the island of Luzon and nearby islands. The Indigo-banded Kingfisher feeds on fish and aquatic insects. It perches on rocks and overhanging branches and foliage and dives steeply into the water to catch its prey. It is one of the largest species of kingfisher in the world. 


3.) Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao)


The Scarlet Macaw is a large, colorful macaw that can weigh up to 1 kg with a body length of 81 cm. It is native to Central and South America. This colorful bird is the national bird of Honduras.

The Blue-and-Yellow Macaw is a colorful parrot native to Central and South America. The Wood Duck is a beautifully colored duck found in North America. This colorful North American waterfowl is typically 54 cm in length with a wingspan of up to 73 cm.
It is also commonly called Carolina Duck.

The Mandarin Duck is a lovely-looking colorful medium-sized duck that grows up to a length of 49 cm with a wingspan of up to 75 cm. The male is very much brightly colored compared to the female species. The male has a red bill, large white crescent above the eye and reddish face and "whiskers". The breast is purple with two vertical white bars and the flanks ruddy, with two orange "sails" at the back.

Most of the most colorful birds in the world are small species. Only a handful of large birds can be considered brightly-colored. Here are some of the few large sized birds in the world.

All the birds included on the list are more than 2 kilograms in weight.

1.) Ocellated Turkey


One of the most beautifully colored large birds in the world is the Ocellated Turkey or formally known as Meleagris ocellata. It can be found in the Yucatan Peninsula. This relatively large bird can weigh up 7 kg or more. It can be found also in Guatemala and Belize. The largest specimen ever recorded was just short of 14 kg and 130 cm.

2.) Indian Peafowl


The impressive Indian Peafowl is definitely a large colorful bird to hold. Its scientific name is Pavo cristatus. It is also commonly known as Blue Peafowl and is native to South Asia.



This strikingly colorful bird is the national bird of India.  It can weigh up to 6 kg or more.

3.) Green Peafowl


The brightly-colored Green Peafowl is a large colorful bird that inhabits the tropical forest of Southeast Asia. It is also commonly known as Javan Peafowl and is scientifically known as Pavo muticus. The Great Northern Loon (Gavia immer) is a large uniquely patterned bird. It can attain a weight of up to 8 kg but on the average it can be 4.1 kg. It is also commonly known as Great Northern Diver or Common Loon.

The American Flamingo or Phoenicopterus ruber is a large and colorful species of flamingo. It is also known as Caribbean Flamingo and is the only flamingo which naturally inhabits North America. It has a lifespan of 40 years, one of the longest in birds and can weigh up to 3 kg.

8.) Himalayan Monal


The Himalayan Monal is a colorful large bird. Its binomial name is Lophophorus impejanus and is also commonly known as the Impeyan Monal, Impeyan Pheasant and Danphe. This bird that can weigh up to 2.5 kg is the national bird of Nepal.

9.) Palawan Peacock


The Palawan Peacock-Pheasant or Polyplectron napoleonis, is a medium-sized bird with glossy and bright blue and green color. The male is handsomest and has an erectile crest, a white stripe over the eyes and highly iridescent metallic green and black plumage. The tail feathers are decorated with large blue-green ocelli, which may be spread fanlike in courtship displays.
